Hey Now

It's impossible to be unhappy while listening to this song.

Iko Iko

My grandma and your grandma
Sitting by the fire
My grandma says to your grandma
"I'm gonna set your flag on fire"

Talkin' 'bout
Hey now
Hey now
Iko iko an nay
Jockomo feena ah na nay
Jockomo feena nay

Look at my king all dressed in red
Iko iko an nay
I bet you five dollars he'll kill you dead
Jockomo feena nay

CHORUS:
Talkin' 'bout
Hey now (hey now)
Hey now (hey now)
Iko iko an nay (whoah-oh)
Jockomo feena ah na nay
Jockomo feena nay

My flag boy and your flag boy
Sitting by the fire
My flag boy says to your flag boy
"I'm gonna set your flag on fire"

(CHORUS)

(bridge)

(hey now)
(hey now)
(hey now)
(hey now)
Jockomo feena nay
Iko!

See that guy all dressed in green
Iko iko an nay
He's not a man, he's a loving machine
Jockomo feena nay

(4x)
Talkin' 'bout
Hey now (hey now)
Hey now (hey now)
Iko iko an nay (whoah-oh)
Jockomo feena ah na nay
Jockomo feena nay

(repeat till fading end)
Jockomo feena nay

Wikipedia has a little history about this Mardi Gras standard. For the record, I prefer the Cyndi Lauper cover, followed closely by the Grateful Dead's version.

Hah! Dogette has nothing on me!!!

Over at Two Nervous Dogs, Dogette has redecorated again (behold the genius that is "Goth Undies of Despair"), and bemoans the fact that she's way early on her Halloween posting.

Never fear, m'dear. To make you feel better, I shall begin my Christmas posting at once, so that people shall gaze upon TND and exclaim, "why, she's positively last-minute!"

So, I begin with a song. A Christmas song from my youth. A song I remember playing often during the holiday's, from a scratched up LP of odd little ditty's with nary a baby Jesus in the lot.

Dear Senor Santa Clause

Dear Senor Santa Claus, I think I tell you what

I would like for Christmas, and I hope you won't forgot.

I only want a peso that I can have for mine

to get my senorita something for Christmastime.

I don't believe you read the card last Christmas that I sent.
You come to see the kids across the street and then you went.

Dear Senor Santa Claus, I think me understand.
Sometimes the toys all gone before you reach the Rio Grande.

Dear Senor Santa Claus, I tell you what I think.
I no got a stocking--I set out my piggy bank.
So please bring me a peso that I can have for mine
to get my senorita something for Christmastime.

On Christmas Eve I watched for you, and I no sleep a wink.
If I no get Lolita something, she feel sad I think.

So please, Senor Santa Claus,
this Christmas be so grand
if I get a peso to buy a ring for my Lolita's hand.

I don't know what I buy for her.
I think I buy a rose.
So she can wear it in her hair
Most everywhere she goes.

Please, Senor Santa Claus, this Christmas be so grand
if I get a peso to buy a ring for my Lolita's hand...

My online research claims that it was written by Elmo and Patty, but for the life of me I can't remember who sang the version I loved so much. The singer was male and sang the song straight (as in no goofy voices). Marty Robbins, maybe? Jim Reeves? Dunno.

Now if I can just find the words to "I'm the Happiest Christmas Tree"...

Soothing Music

From Carlos Santana:

Love is You

Dah-dah-dit-dah-dah. Dit-dah-dit-dah.
Dah-dah-dit-dah-dah. Dit-dah-dit-dah.
Dit-dah-d...

Huh? Oh, yeah, it's an instrumental, and it's not any funnier than the first time I tried it.

But it does point up the fact that Rocket Jones needs an audio component. A chance to expand my genius into new mediums.

Or to dilute the stupidity.

Oh goodie. I'm channeling my wife.

update: Hmmm... the link above takes you to the comment left on the post I was linking to, instead of the post itself. I'd tell you to just do a search, but this morning I'm getting the ol' "Forbidden" message on the search function. Tell you what, if you absolutely must see the original post that I tried to link to (you are getting sleepy... sleepy... you must see the original post... you NEED to see the original post...), over on the right column are my archives. Click "April, 2004" and then scroll on down to the 20th. The post is titled "Ripple Fire". Happy now?

Because you need a catchy theme song, right?

Nothing definite here, but just in case I ever decide to start a cult, I've decided that this will be the official song.

(to the tune of Shambala by Three Dog Night)

Wash away my troubles, wash away my pain
With the rain in Shambala Rocket Jones
Wash away my sorrows, wash away my shame
With the rain in Shambala Rocket Jones

*Ooooh... yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah*

*This part repeats twice after each verse

Everyone is helpful, everyone is kind
On the road to Shambala Rocket Jones
Everyone is lucky, everyone is so kind
On the road to Shambala Rocket Jones

How does your light shine
In the halls of Shambala Rocket Jones
How does your light shine
In the halls of Shambala Rocket Jones

I can tell my sister 'bout the flowers in her eyes
On the road to Shambala Rocket Jones
I can tell my brother 'bout the flowers in his eyes
On the road to Shambala Rocket Jones

How does your light shine
In the halls of Shambala Rocket Jones
How does your light shine
In the halls of Shambala Rocket Jones
Tell me how, how does your light shine
In the halls of Shambala Rocket Jones
Tell me how, how does your light shine
In the halls of Shambala Rocket Jones

With various "oooo's," "yeah, yeah, yeahs," and "Shambala" "Rocket Jones" until the fadeout.

Until I make up my mind, just continue to treat me as usual, that is, like a wise and benevolent friend that you greatly admire.

I hear you snickering. Don't make me make kool-aid!

This song makes me think of my kids

None of my children were afraid to spread their wings and take a chance on the big world outside our family home. It's hard as a parent to let go and watch them make mistakes, because you're used to being a safety belt and suddenly you've instead become a safety net. They may fall, but you're still there to keep them from crashing. They discover the hard way that independence isn't easy, but as you test the air every bit of turbulence you encounter increases your confidence and allows you to truly soar.

I'm excerpting some lyrics from the musical Wicked. This song is sung as a duet by Elphaba (before she becomes the Wicked Witch), and her good friend Glinda (who becomes the Good Witch).

Defying Gravity

(some intro omitted)

Something has changed within me

Something is not the same

I'm through with playing by

The rules of someone else's game

Too late for second-guessing

Too late to go back to sleep

It's time to trust my instincts

Close my eyes

And leap...

It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
And you can't pull me down

GLINDA
Can't I make you understand
You're having delusions of grandeur?

ELPHABA
I'm through accepting limits
Cuz someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try I'll never know
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
Well if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost

I'd sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down!

(bridge omitted)

ELPHABA
So if you care to find me
Look to the Western sky!
As someone told me lately
Everyone deserves the chance to fly
And if I'm flying solo
At least I'm flying free
To those who ground me
Take a message back from me!

Tell them how I am defying gravity
I'm flying high, defying gravity
And soon I'll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No Wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!!

(ending omitted)

I didn't leave out parts of the words because they aren't beautiful, but because they didn't fit the picture I'm trying to paint (to mix mediums and metaphores).

I highly recommend that you get a copy of the Wicked soundtrack and give a listen. Amazing work, and this particular song thrills me every time I hear it.

And makes me think of my kids.

Faith in Me, Faith in You

For Dawn, because she has more of this than anyone else I know, even when she doesn't quite believe it herself.

Faith in Me, Faith in You

A single mother with two children
Makes lunches in the morning
And on her way to work she drops them off at school
And tells them
Faith in me
Faith in you

A farmer kneels in his fields with dust
Running through his fingers
Says "I'm gonna lose you if it don't rain real soon"
He looks up and says
Faith in me
Faith in you

Oh, I have to have faith
That's where it all starts
I know I have to have faith in myself
It's free and it's found right here in my heart
When I think about things and all the dreams I wanna see come true
Let me tell you just what I do
I take a look in the mirror and I smile and say
Have faith in me
Faith in you

In the shadows of the city
By the banks of the river
From the doorway of his cardboard room
A man cries out
Faith in me
Faith in you

Before the poverty and prejudice
All the hunger and pain
And the social injustice, just watch the boss' reign*
Here 'em sing
Faith in me
Faith in you

Oh, I have to have faith
That's where it all starts
I know I have to have faith in myself
It's free and it's found right here in my heart
When I think about things and all the dreams I wanna see come true
Let me tell you just what I do
I take a look in the mirror and I smile and say
Have faith in me
Faith in you

I take a look in the mirror and I smile and say
Have faith in me
Faith in you

-- Doug Stone

Every last one of us is stronger than we realize. All too often people give up on themselves long before they break.

*that "boss' reign" line is probably incorrect, but it's the best I can figure out from listening to the song and I can't find the lyrics on Google.

Have an earworm, and don't say I never gave you anything

Who remembers Peaches and Herb? Here's a little bit of Shake Your Groove Thing:

Let's show the world we can dance

Bad enough to strut our stuff

The music gives us a chance

We do more out on the floor

Groovin' loose or heart to heart
We put in motion every single part
Funky sounds wall to wall
We're bumpin' booties, havin' us a ball, y'all

Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah
Show 'em how we do it now
Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah
Show 'em how we do it now

I'd pay money to hear William Shatner sing that live.

Rainmakers

I've mentioned before how much I like the Rainmakers, especially their lyrics. Here's a great example of packing a lot of story and meaning into a few words. From their album The Good News and the Bad News.

We Walk The Levee

In the '51 flood the river got mean
The levee broke at a town downstream
Up on our levee where the county lines meet
Caught a couple of their boys with some TNT

Something had to give and it gave down there
My thoughts are with you but my family's here
It was you this time it was us before
Nothing's fair in flood and war

(chorus)
And blood's thicker than water
But thin and cold in the flood
The mud and the guilt and the gun get heavy
We do what we gotta
We walk the levee

My sisters married brothers from the neighboring town
My cousin and his boy farm his father's ground
I'm a Christian man with a bible and a gun
Just praying to God ain't gotta shoot no one

And blood's thicker than water
But thin and cold in the flood
The mud and the guilt and the gun get heavy
We do what we gotta
We walk the levee

Now I'm just a man protecting his home
Why do I feel like a dog out killin' his own
Itchy on the trigger, quick on the draw
Shined the flashlight in the face of a twelve year old kid
Who started cryin' for his ma

(spoken) I told him to get on home

I saw him in church on Sunday, heard the minister speak
About Noah and the ark and the other cheek
And Jesus' love and Judas' kiss
I'll think of that tonight on the graveyard shift

And blood's thicker than water
But thin and cold in the flood
The mud and the guilt and the gun get heavy
We do what we gotta
We walk the levee

And blood's thicker than water
But thin and cold in the flood
The mud and the guilt and the gun get heavy
We do what we gotta
We walk the levee

Yes we do what we gotta
We walk the levee

Damn good albums if you can find 'em.

Good Advice for anyone

Originally done by Chet Atkins.

Frog Kissin'

Do you remember in the fairy tale, how the wicked witches spell
Turned the handsome prince to a toad?
By the power of a potion, she handed him the notion
He was lower than the dirt in the road.
And though she left him green and warted, her evil plans were thwarted
Their chanced to happen by a young miss
Who inspite of his complexion, offered him affection
And broke the wicked curse with her kiss

So if you've never been frog kissing
Then you don't know what you've been missin',
There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log.
And if you've never been charm-breakin',
Then you've never been handsome prince makin'.
You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down,
Kiss you a frog!

Once upon a time ago, I was down and feelin' low
Like a lonely frog in a pond
My life was just a joke, and I was just about to croak
Cuz I'd be zapped by life's wicked wand.
But in the depths of my depression, there came a true expression
Of love from a person so sweet.
She gave me warm fuzzy feelings, feelings that were healin'
And she knocked me off my little webbed feet.

There's a happy-ever-after-land, deep in the heart of man
Where a prince and princess abides.
But all we get are glimpses, of the happy prince or princess
'Cauce they're covered with a green warty hide.
Though they're full of life's potential, they're lacking one essential
To enable them to shine like a star.
That's a handsome guy or missus, to smother them with kisses
And love them just the way that they are.

That's the secret of frog kissing
You can do it too if you'll just listen
There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log.
That's the secret of charm-breakin',
That's the secret of handsome prince makin'.
You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down,
Kiss you a...
You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down,
Kiss you a...
You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down,
Kiss you a frog!

And because the site where I found this offered up the chord progression, here it is, just for us guitar players.

KEY D

verse:
Am E7 F
G G7 C D
Am A7 Dm A7 Dm-A7-Dm
D7 G D G

chorus:
G7 C A7
Dm G7 Am
G7 C A7
F F G Am

They also slightly altered the lyrics so they could be played in 3/4 time, so that they "could make it sound like a song that belonged at a Renaissance Festival." I changed 'em back to match what I hear on my original Chet Atkins version.

Not far from the tree

I just noticed that Mookie has the lyrics to a toe-tapping minor classic on her sidebar. From the Chairmen of the Board:

Give Me Just A Little More Time

[Chorus:]
Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow
Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow

Life's too short to make a mistake
Let's think of each other and hesitate
Young and impatient we may be
There's no need to act foolishly
If we part our hearts won't forget it
Years from now we'll surely regret it

[Chorus]

You're young and you're in a hurry
You're eager for love but don't you worry
We both want the sweetness in life
But these things don't come overnight
Don't give up cos love's been slow
Boy, we're gonna succeed with another blow

Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow
Baby please baby
Baby please baby

Love is that mountain we must climb
Let's climb it together your hand in mine
We haven't known each other too long
But the feeling I have is oh so strong
I know we can make it there's no doubt
We owe it to ourselves to find it out

Just,
[Chorus]

Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow
Baby, please baby
Baby, please baby

[Chorus]
[Repeat And Fade]

It runs in the family.

For My Special Valentine

Just don't tell my wife. Kidding.

Forever and Ever, Amen

You may think that I'm talking foolish.
You've heard that I'm wild and I'm free.
You may wonder how I can promise you now,
This love that I feel for you always will be.
You're not this time that I'm killing.
I'm no longer one of those guys.
As sure as I live this love that I give.
Is gonna be yours until the day that I die.

Oh, baby, I'm gonna love you forever,
Forever and ever amen.
As long as old men sit and talk about the weather,
As long as old women sit and talk about old men.
If you wonder how long I'll be faithful,
I'll be happy to tell you again:
I'm gonna love you forever and ever,
Forever and ever, Amen.

They say that time takes it's toll on a body;
Makes the young girls brown hair turn grey.
But honey, I don't care, I ain't in love with your hair,
And if it all fell out, well, I'd love you anyway.
They say time can play tricks on the memory;
Make people forget things they knew.
But it's easy to see it's happening to me:
I've already forgotten every woman but you.

Oh, darlin', I'm gonna love you forever,
Forever and ever amen.
As long as old men sit and talk about the weather,
As long as old women sit and talk about old men.
If you wonder how long I'll be faithful,
Well, just listen to how this song ends.
I'm gonna love you forever and ever,
Forever and ever, Amen.

I'm gonna love you forever and ever,
Forever and ever, forever and ever,
Forever and ever, Amen.

For My Special Valentine

Beautiful mood music.

Never My Love

The 5th Dimension

You ask me if
There'll come a time when I grow tired of you.
Never my love,
Never my love.

You wonder if
This heart of mine will lose it's desire for you.
Never my love,
Never my love.

What makes you think love will end,
When you know that my whole life depends
On you.

You say you fear
I'll change my mind and I won't require you.
Never my love,
No, never, never my love.

Now how can you think love will end,
When I've asked you to spend your whole life
With me.

Never my love.

I'll leave you never my love.
Oh, believe me, baby.
I want you forever and ever my love.
I want to be...

Oh yeah.

A Moment of Culture

Love in the bayou...

Pit Bulls and Chain Saws - Bellamy Brothers

Well I met a real beauty down in Baton Rouge
She stole away my heart with some black voodoo
I followed her home like a man in a trance
She started getting weird and went into her dance
A witchy little woman with some character flaws
She loves pit bulls and chain saws

Now it didn't take long for me to find that door
But she locked it up tight so I couldn't go far
Her momma cast a spell and her daddy threw a curse
And my whole day went from bad to worse
And what came next was the very last straw
She loves pit bulls and chain saws

Well the dogs are howlin', the saws are rippin'
Rats are flying and the cats tail whippin'
She's cooking up a love potion in the kitchen
I hate to leave but I gotta be zippin'

When they found me I was high in a cypress tree
Her brother sawed it down while she chanted over me
Under heavy pressure we were married that night
Now we live in the swamp in our own doublewide
Just look at me now I'm having a ball
With my pit bulls and chain saws

I got 'em cheap from my brother-in-law
Pit bulls and chain saws.

The 12 Days After Christmas

I well remember this song as sung by our high school chorus. I can still sing the first half from memory, even though I was in the orchestra and never got a look at the actual lyrics. This version (yay internet!) is a little different than what I remember, but that could very well be the ol' memory going or too much nog or whatnot.

Anyway, this is not sung to the tune of the original, but is wonderful nevertheless.

The first day after Christmas

my true love and I had a fight

And so I chopped the pear tree down

And burnt it, just for spite

Then with a single cartridge

I shot that blasted partridge

My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The second day after Christmas, I pulled on the old rubber gloves
And very gently wrung the necks
Of both those stupid turtle doves.

The third day after Christmas, my mother caught the croup
I had to use the three French hens
To make her some chicken soup.

The four calling birds were a big mistake
For their language was obscene
The five golden rings were completely fake
And they turned my fingers putrid green.

The sixth day after Christmas, the six laying geese wouldn't lay
So I sent the whole darn gaggle to
The neighborhood A.S.P.C.A.

The seventh day, what a mess I had found
The seven swans-a-swimming all had drowned
My true love, my true love
My true love gave to me

The eighth day after Christmas, before they could suspect
I bundled up the
Twelve drummers drumming
Eleven pipers piping
Ten lords-a-leaping
Nine ladies dancing
Eight maids-a-milking
(well, actually I kept *one* of the ladies)
And sent them back collect

I wrote my true love
"We are through, love!"
And I said in so many words
"Furthermore your Christmas gifts were for the
(Soprani) Birds!"

(Soprani) Birds!!!

(Everyone else) Four calling birds,
Three french hens,
Two turtle doves
And a partridge in a pear tree!"

There are a couple of alternate (and more crude) versions here. PS. I attended high school in the late 70's, so the "1992" attribution is just wrong.

Happy Anniversary to my Love

Twenty-three years, and I'm ready for fifty more, because I feel exactly like this:

I'm no poet and I know it
I don't use five dollar words
This might not sound like much compared to all the pretty things you've heard
But here's how I'd explain it
Since you brought it up
It won't sound like anybody else's version of love

ItÂ’s like just before dark
Jump in the car
Buy an ice cream and see how far we can drive before it melts kinda feelinÂ’
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel inside
ThereÂ’s a cow in the road and you swerve to the left
Fate skips a beat and it scares you to death and you laugh until you cry
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel inside

It might not be more suitable for greeting cards and such
But itÂ’s a true and honest feeling and if you feel it half as much
We could go through life together without a worry or a care
Knowing deep down in our hearts that weÂ’ve got something special here

ItÂ’s like just before dark
Jump in the car
Buy an ice cream and see how far we can drive before it melts kinda feelinÂ’
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel inside
ThereÂ’s a cow in the road and you swerve to the left
Fate skips a beat and it scares you to death and you laugh until you cry
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel inside
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel

I have always heard you canÂ’t put love into words

ItÂ’s like just before dark
Jump in the car
Buy an ice cream and see how far we can drive before it melts kinda feelinÂ’
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel inside
ThereÂ’s a cow in the road and you swerve to the left
Fate skips a beat and it scares you to death and you laugh until you cry
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel inside
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel inside
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel inside
ThatÂ’s how I feel
ThatÂ’s how your love makes me feel

Happy Birthday to My Love

Today is her birthday. Every day I give thanks for finding her.

Always Be Together

Pablo Cruise

When I look back on our early years
And how we spent so much time in tears
It's a wonder that we're face to face tonight
But something saw us through all those times
Something stronger than you or I
Here we are, and now it sure feels right

Oh I have seen
What your love has done for me
And I could stay with you forever
Oh I, I know
Love like this can't help but grow
That's why, we will always be together

When you left me all alone
I could have made it on my own
But part of me was missing
And when we had so much to say
All the words got in the way
Until we took the time to listen

Oh I have seen
What your love has done for me
And I could stay with you forever
Oh I, I know
Love like this can't help but grow
That's why, we will always be together

When I look back on our early years
And how we spent so much time in tears
It's a wonder that we're face to face tonight
But something saw us through all those times
Something stronger than you or I
And here we are, and now it sure feels right

Oh I have seen
What your love has done for me
And I could stay with you forever
Oh I, I know
Love like this can't help but grow
That's why, we will always be together

Always be together

Happy Birthday to My Love

Another favorite song lyric that touches on my feelings for my wife.

God Only Knows

Beach Boys

I may not always love you
But long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
IÂ’ll make you so sure about it

God only knows what IÂ’d be without you

If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me

God only knows what IÂ’d be without you

God only knows what IÂ’d be without you

If you should ever leave me
Well life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me

God only knows what IÂ’d be without you
God only knows what IÂ’d be without you
God only knows

(repeat and fade)

Happy Birthday, Liz.

Happy Birthday to My Love

It's my wife's birthday this week, and Munuviana just happens to share the 14th with her. She was born on Easter day, so the meticulously nosy could figure out how old she is.

This is a song that's special to us both.

She & I

Alabama

She and I live in our own little world
Don't worry about the world outside
She and I agree
She and I lead a perfectly normal life

Ah but just because we aren't often seen socially
People think we've got something to hide.
But all our friends know we're just a little old fashioned
She and I

chorus

Oh ain't that great
Aint it fine
To have a love someone that others can't find
Aint it wonderful to know all we ever need is just the two of us
She and I
So wonderful
She and I

She and I share with every body else
The same wants, needs and desires
She and I save
She and I pay on everything we acquire

Ah but just because we aren't often seen separately
People think we live one life.
Its hard for them to see how anyone could be as close as
She and I

repeat chorus

Made me think of lovely cheese*

Play something sweet

Play something mellow

Play something I can sink my teeth in like jello

Play something I can understand

Play me some Brickyard Blues.

Play something sweet
And make it funky
So I can lay back and grin like a monkey
Play something I can understand
Play me some Brickyard Blues.
