Thunder Will Never Scare You Again, Sam

We had to put our dog, Sam, to sleep today.

We got Sam ten years ago from an animal rescue. He was four years old at the time. Our daughter Robyn has allergies, so her and I went looking for a dog that she could tolerate being around. Sam jumped up and bit her in the butt, and that's when I fell in love with him. We took him home with us.

His spirit was still strong, but his old body failed him. He's buried now in the backyard, where he loved to be.

10 It is one of the most painful duties any human being has to face, that last trip to the vet's. My condolences, and I know that that was one very, very much loved dog. Kipling said it best: "THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way From men and women to fill our day; And when we are certain of sorrow in store, Why do we always arrange for more? Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware Of giving your heart to a dog to tear. Buy a pup and your money will buy Love unflinching that cannot lie— Perfect passion and worship fed By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head. Nevertheless it is hardly fair To risk your heart for a dog to tear. When the fourteen years which Nature permits Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits, And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs To lethal chambers or loaded guns, Then you will find—it’s your own affair— But . . . you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear. When the body that lived at your single will, With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!). When the spirit that answered your every mood Is gone—wherever it goes—for good, You will discover how much you care, And will give your heart to a dog to tear. We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way, When it comes to burying Christian clay. Our loves are not given, but only lent, At compound interest of cent per cent. Though it is not always the case, I believe, That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve. For, when debts are payable, right or wrong, A short-time loan is as bad as a long— So why in—Heaven (before we are there) Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?" And he answered his own question: "When the Man waked up he said, 'What is Wild Dog doing here?' And the Woman said, 'His name is not Wild Dog any more, but the First Friend, because he will be our friend for always and always and always.'" Hugs to all, Zoe

14 I'd like to think he's stirring up a little thunder of his own - and liking it. Rest in peace, friend.

18 Unfortunately I know exactly how you all feel. Putting my dog Bart down was the hardest thing I've ever done even though it was the right decision. While it's hard to imagine now, it does ease with time. Hugs to all of you...

19 I left a similar sentiment in a more recent post, but again, my deepest condolences to you and your family. He was a cute little guy. There are few things that suck as bad as having to say goodbye to their sweet faces.

20 Ted, I am so sorry you lost your dog. I still get misty-eyed thinking of my little Buddy, who died 5 years ago. I'm also sorry I'm a week late in posting this, but that's how I roll these days...
