Jes' Ducky
Thanks to all for the prayers and good wishes! Liz came through her surgery in good shape. Right now she's pretty well doped to the gills on morphine, and she's got the 'happy button' that she can press when she needs an extra jolt. We expect she'll be coming home on monday.

Ok, if youÂ’ve read the first few of these, then you know what its all about. This is the personal stuff, the things I need to vent about or get off my chest or even just reminisce about in an attempt to de-stress myself. ItÂ’s inside the extended entry, read it or not, itÂ’s up to you.

Not to be a bother, but do we know what ails Liz? Was it mentioned and I missed it? Is it something preferred to be left unmentioned?
Either way: all the best for you and yours. Here's to a swimmingly successful operation! *glug*

I understand her, though, in not wanting to be a bother. When I was in the hospital recently (and recovering at home), I tried to do as much for myself as humanly possible, and my friends let me know that my independent streak was pissing them off. It's hard to give up (incrementally or all at once) things that used to come so easily for you. And sometimes it hurts to see people doing those things that you never gave a thought to before.
But Liz is so lucky to have you there always. I had to do for myself because most times, nobody was around, or I had to wait until they were done with work or whatever they had to do until I could have something done for me. Feeling powerless just eats away at you, but it really is nice to have someone who cares enough to take over when you yourself just can't do whatever needs to be done.
Both my grandmother and great-grandmother became bedridden in their later years -- these were feisty women who never, ever depended on anyone. But at some point, both reached the point where they were simply grateful for whatever help we could give them, even though it was a constant reminder of their fragile states. Even though we're the ones who are stressed out about practically having to beg them to do something for them, it allows them to kind of keep some of their power, reminding us that they would be more than happy to do for themselves, if only they could.
In any event, Liz sounds like one incredible lady, and I wish her all the love and luck in the world during this incredibly difficult time!

It's amazing how the labor pains were spread five minutes apart like that. Lucky her. I swear with my last one the pains were two seconds apart. I don't really discuss the birth of my oldes one much but let's just say by the time my drunken ex husband decided to take me to the hospital, the baby's head was pretty much out.

I was an odd Mom for a first-timer: I had NO labor pains at all--not even Braxton-Hicks twitches, then my water broke ten ways to Sunday (As I like to put it, "zero to sopping in two seconds!") as I lay in bed half-asleep. I came into the hospital on my own two feet, laid down on the LDR bed I was assigned to, and THEN the first pain hit! Then my labor pains didn't progress--but when they put me on Pitocin they just went into that five-minutes-apart thing, until the last 20 minutes. And then Zane practically squirted out like a melon seed. You could have clocked him on radar and given him a speeding ticket, I swear! I don't think I even needed the epidural I got, as quikly as everything went.
Elapsed time from soggy bed surprise to motherhood? A little over 9 hours, with 20 minutes of hard pushing. Must have been these wide hips... ;-)

Touching, Ted. Your wife is obviously in good hands, and I'm glad that the two of you are making a go of it... and that you've got good parking privileges. :-)
Seriously, though, as Thanksgiving approaches, the two of you are a success story -- a couple that didn't throw in the towel when things started to get difficult.
Hugs to your entire family.

So often when a wife is seriously ill, the husband can't handle it (divorce rates of cancer patients back me up on that horrible generalization)...it says a lot about you that you can find the humor in it, Ted.

We should count our blessing everyday. I can't imagine what it's like to face a doctor's gaze. I mean, I, m'self, haven't had so much as a common cold in ten years. I just can't fathom dealing with a serious physical challenge. Will of steel required? All the best to you and yours, blog bro'!

This is an amazing story -- and I appreciate you for sharing it with us. Have you ever thought of sending it into a magazine? I used to work for Easter Seals, and we were always looking for "poster children" -- this is a story that needs to be shared beyond the blogosphere, because it's so hopeful and touching. (I am a magazine editor; it wouldn't fit my demographic, but I know there is probably the "right" publication out there that would kill to tell your story!)

"Seriously"
It's going to be that, because I think I need to get a few things out there over the next few weeks. Because you might not want to read it, I'll just put the title as Seriously and the actual post in the extended entry. The plan is not to dwell on depressing miserable shit, but some of that may occasionally happen.
Comments, commiseration, quips, slams, mocking, etc. are cordially invited.
