That line keeps repeating in my head
So New Orleans Mayor Nagin has appointed a committee to oversee reconstruction. This is a different committee than the one appointed by the city council to oversee reconstruction. And then, not to be outdone, Governor Blanco has appointer her very own committee to oversee reconstruction.
More hands muddying the money trail, more people to blame when questions arise. These folks are old pros at the grand con game called corrupt government.
I'm reminded of the movie Operation Petticoat. Cary Grant was the skipper of a submarine, and Tony Curtis was his "supply" officer who specialized in creative larceny to get things done. During an air raid, the supply troops headed out, saying "In confusion, there is profit."
True words.

Great movie, forgot the quote until you mentioned it. Very true, especially in that circumstance. Idjits.

It ain't the Supreme Court, but it's still an honor
I've been
promoted to "crony" over at the Ministry of Minor Perfidy!
If you don't regularly read these guys, then you're not getting your minimum requirement of evil robot overlords, all things yeasty and the occasional neener-neener from a snotty Canadian.

Meanwhile, in my fantasies... (updated)
Sports, that is.
Our baseball season is over. I wound up a respectable 5th out of 10 teams, and was fighting for 4th throughout the last month or so. (update: I did finish in 4th place in the final standings) Many thanks to annika for being the commish for this league, I had a blast. Congrats to Hank's Homeys for running away with the pennant.
Meanwhile, over at the stadium, I inexplicably won again thanks to some truly uninspired play by my opponents roster. By all rights, he should've stomped me. I'm not loving this league, because the scoring emphasis seems to be on touchdowns, which make your wide recievers the primary weapons. Running backs and quarterbacks are a very small part of the equation that I'm seeing so far. It's still fun, but I preferred last year's setup, where total yardage and number of receptions and other stats factored in.
You still have the chance to sign up for the fantasy hockey league. You don't have to obsess, peoples, it's for fun!

Thank you, Ted. I missed out on a bunch of fantasy football, and I was considering starting a fantasy hockey league. I'm in!

Flower blogging
I was telling a coworker about a couple of plants I've got going on this year in our front yard and told her I'd take pictures.

*sigh* I've always wanted a Mandevilla...they last all year here in Texas as long as you protect them from frost. I'm not normally a pink flower type of girl, but blooms like that make me eat my words. Maybe set the color off with something complimentary, so it's less...yanno, pink.
Now if they ever bred a purple or blue one, I'm SO there!

Happy Birthday, Dad
It was a good day yesterday.
Called my Dad, he's 73 now. He sold his house and moved in with his girlfriend. Bought a brand new fully loaded minivan too, he does that every few years.
On the home front, Liz reupholstered a footstool while I installed a new computerized thermostat for the house. We also did some patching and painting in the soon-to-be sewing room.
Yep, a boring and pointless post. Welcome to Rocket Jones.

Have you started cursing the thermostat yet?
I'm no Luddite, but I really really really miss the simple mercury-switch Honeywell thermostat from our old house. Simply push a little lever until the system starts. We have a new Honeywell with numerous programs and modes, but no ability to do that one simple little function. I don't want to use my brain to turn on the A/C or heat.
Digital-everything is not always good. Give me a proper analog interface every now and then to keep me happy. I must be getting old.

LOL John, the unit I installed was removed from a brand new home by my neighbor (an A/C guy) at the request of the new homeowner who wanted it replaced with an old-fashioned mercury switch model.
This is the second new thermostat I've put in. The first was not long after we moved in, probably 15 years ago. It was getting fussy, but worked reliably for all that time.
I got a complete demo and explanation for how everything on the new one works. Not that it matters much, I'm thinking we'll be very stingy with the heat this winter because of fuel costs. That's ok though, that's what sweaters, blankets and cuddling are for.

I've managed to save up roughly $54202 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?

Air Force Blue - the other side
I've written about some of my adventures while in the Air Force, many while serving as a Security Policeman. While I tend to share the lighter moments, it's never far from your mind that things can become serious and deadly in a split second. That's the nature of the job.
Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Jacobson, 21, was providing convoy security Sept. 28 near Camp Bucca, Iraq, when the vehicle she was riding in was hit by an improvised explosive device. She is the first female Airman killed in the line of duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Please, follow this link and leave words of encouragement for those she left behind in the comments section.

Thanks for the TB. Any time we can spread the word on the heroics of one of our own we should. As a Security Policeman/Security Forces Member, now CATM I appreciate your assistance.
My heart and prayers go to her and her family.

Well Ted in my book the Halloween season is officially here now.Time to start reading The Halloween Tree by Bradbury.Ghosts and gore will be the norm on most channels for the next month.Flesh Feast (a.k.a.:Time is Terror)is a movie that I wouldn't mind seeing. It was Veronica Lake's last movie befor her untimely death in`73.She was only 53 although rumor has it that she may have only been 49.Although I have only seen a couple of her flicks quite a while ago I still have a hard time picturing her as a mad scientist.I am wondering if she looked as good as she did in her younger days.If so she could be the hottest villianess ever.
Normally I'm partial to a good ghost story like......uh......Ghost Story.Or,perhaps,The Others. One of the all time ultimate ghost stories.Already a classic in my book. The scene where the little girl was in bed and started talking in the voice of the live boy really freaked me out. That's saying something because it takes a lot to freak me out.I once slept in a small Conferderate cemetery way back in the mountains on Halloween night on a dare bet so believe me when I say that not much freaks me out along those lines. That scene, however, made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Another fave of mine that I hope someone shows this year is Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp along with Christina Ricci,Miranda Richardson and their....uh...er...lovelies.
While I'm on the subject of the Hollow movie I gotta give a plug for one of my fave actors/martial artists Ray Park who played the Headless Horseman. At least that is when he didn't have a head.Christopher Walken is billed as the Hessian but Ray played the fighting Horseman.I knew it was him the second I saw that style of Wu Shu.He also played Darth Maul on Star Wars:Episode One,the character of Toad on the X-Men as well as a few other roles.Special up yours to Imdb for not listing him in the credits on the Hollow page of their site.He is listed on his own personal Imdb page.
