I'm the author of "The Decay of the Atomic Powered Aircraft Program" that was cited in that post. It lives on my site too: http://www.megazone.org/ANP/
Several years back, someone who had read the paper sent me a copy of Steambird. It really doesn't have anything to do with the actual ANP program, and it is extremely ridiculous. But it is a fun read in a 'B-movie' kind of way. The author clearly had a fascination with steam power - so, instead of using atomic heat to replace combustion, it had a full steam plant reactor turning steam turbines, which drove the jets mechanically - ducted fans basically. It was totally ludicrous, but reading it was like looking at an accident scene - you can't stop because it is so bad.
Many years ago Smithsonian/Air&Space had a cover story on Project Pluto that was quite a good read.
