Bit of a rut
Liz hit a sale on DVD's and picked up a few that we had on VHS. This evening while walking through another store I found a great deal on
Ghostbusters I & II in a set. When we got home, Liz realized that she'd picked up
Gung Ho,
Guarding Tess and
Grease.
Today was brought to you by the letter "G".
Good Grief.

It's the only explanation, really
A woman has
sued King county in Washington state.
In a lawsuit filed 10 days ago in Pierce County Superior Court, Robinette Amaker of North Carolina claimed that the brain of her deceased brother, Bradley Gierlich, was taken from his body in 1998 at the King County Medical Examiner's office.
The only reason I can see this becoming an issue now after seven years is that maybe he's up for reelection.

Yet momma wanted me to be a Priest
Over at
Owlish Mutterings, he linked to this "
Job Predictor".
According to this, Rocket Jones' ideal job is trained assassin. Cool.
And when I type in my real name (Ted Phipps), it says I should become a pirate.
You should start being nicer to me.
Let's see... full name (Robert T Phipps)... Yeehaw! My ideal job is a lottery winner - no need to work !
I like this game.

I get to be a Supermodel, using my real name. But my husband does too. So, I'll give that profession up...you know, too much competition and all.
I guess I'll have to stick with being a Brain Surgeon then.

A teasmaid is the English equivalent of a coffeemaker, specifically for hot tea, as far as I can tell. The name may be old too; most of the references I could find were to the 50's.

It appears that Disney was already using similar technology this past summer.
We feed some dolphins and observed photographers in strategic locations taking photos. As soon as your picture was taken someone behind you would hand you a piece of paper with information on how to view your pictures immediately at some photo stations directly behind the feeding area.

Hot Wax
Our local classical music station has a nice little piece every morning that runs down the minutia of the day such as sunrise, sunset, moon phase, as well as a little bit about the day in history.
This morning the host mentioned a wax cylinder recording made in 1895 of the "Poets and Peasants Overture", done by Baldwin's Cadet Band of Boston. Follow this link to see today's show notes, and if you scroll down you can click the victrola to hear an audio of the original recording.

The one friend I managed to hear from, only because he was visiting a brother in Houston, sent me some camera phone pics of Pascagoula. I managed to run across a photo package from the local paper in Biloxi of my old neighborhood in Gulfport a the corner of Hwy 90 and Lorrain Cowan Rd. It has effectively ceased to exist and there is no word on the fate of my former neighbors, most of which are retired folks and I have stayed in touch with over the years.
I fear the worst for alot of them. It's a truly heartbreaking situation.
Thanks for the concern Ted.

Looking at those pictures--especially the blue/purple structure in the lower right-hand corner...look to the left of that structure. In the before picture, there's a large building and a parking lot. In the after picture, there's the large building and a large
something in the parking lot, at a funny angle.
I think it's a barge.
Jeeze Louise.

I believe the structure in the lot is a casino barge and the blue structure is possibly the Aquarium?I blew it up with the maginifier and it appears to have three other objects inside of it like the tanks in all of the media footage.Could just be a marina or something though.
On the weather channel the afternoon before Katrina hit Jim Cantore was talking to the owner of a casino barge the size of an aircraft carrier who was trying to get the last of his close up done. The next day the barge was sitting on top of a Howard Johnson's.You couldn't even see the HoJo because it was flattened under the barge.
One other story that freaked me out was that during the height of the storm they had to send out three tugs into downtown Birmingham to retrieve an oil tanker that was bouncing off of the skyscrapers like a pinball.
Then again there's the pics of the big bridge down there that was closed because it had an offshore oil rig jammed up under it.There where 11 oil rigs missing from the gulf last I heard.

Russ, are you sure it was Birmingham? Mobile, maybe, but Birmingham is in northern Alabama, halfway between Montgomery and Tennessee.
Posted by: Ted at September 01, 2005 06:49 PM (+OVgL)
5
Yeah it probably was Mobile. Now you know why I need a GPS unit.I get backasswards like that sometimes.
Posted by: Russ at September 01, 2005 08:15 PM (ObxzR)

Victor - yeah, there's a barge or boat moored in the first picture that looks like what ended up in the parking lot. And looking at the cars in the first picture, it ain't exactly small.
Yikes.

I should've mentioned that those photos were taken more than a year apart, according to the NOAA. That'll account for some detail differences.
That probabaly is a barge tossed ashore, it's probably not the same one in both photos.

A little bit of net searching tells me that the casino in the before photo is most likely the Copa Gulfport and the blue thing is the Marine Life Oceanarium. The dolphins are now living in a hotel swimming pool.Serious!
The little roundy round "circus" road near the bottom and a bit to the left is the junction of Jones Park Dr.,23rd Ave and Gulfport Harbor St.
Posted by: Russ at September 01, 2005 11:40 PM (ObxzR)

The Copa Casino is in the before picture. It is the ship in the lower right moored at the state port. It used to be called the Pride of Mississippi and had to sail for people to gamble before dockside gaming passed. It was always breaking down. So they used it stationary for a few years before towing it off and replacing it with the barge that is shown about 200 yds south on dry land. The blue/purple structure is the Grand Casion complex. Half of it is now sitting across Hwy 90.
The other thing that is pretty gnarly is that the Mississippi State Port deals alot in frozen poultry and bananas. Dole banana has a big container yard there. If you eat Dole bananas, chances are they come through Gulfport. The frozen chicken goes all over the place but mostly to Russia and China. The poultry freezers are all on the west side of the port. You may have seen some of the pictures where it appears to have flooded crates or waxed freezer boxes with Dole container trailers scattered about? Yep, 15 or 20 tons of frozen chicken thawing in the September heat. They say the stench is something to behold.

Soothing Music
From Carlos Santana:
Love is You
Dah-dah-dit-dah-dah. Dit-dah-dit-dah.
Dah-dah-dit-dah-dah. Dit-dah-dit-dah.
Dit-dah-d...
Huh? Oh, yeah, it's an instrumental, and it's not any funnier than the first time I tried it.
But it does point up the fact that Rocket Jones needs an audio component. A chance to expand my genius into new mediums.
Or to dilute the stupidity.
Oh goodie. I'm channeling my wife.
update: Hmmm... the link above takes you to the comment left on the post I was linking to, instead of the post itself. I'd tell you to just do a search, but this morning I'm getting the ol' "Forbidden" message on the search function. Tell you what, if you absolutely must see the original post that I tried to link to (you are getting sleepy... sleepy... you must see the original post... you NEED to see the original post...), over on the right column are my archives. Click "April, 2004" and then scroll on down to the 20th. The post is titled "Ripple Fire". Happy now?

It's Hurricane Relief Day around the blogosphere, and MuNu's very own

Kudos on your efforts to bring relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. There is another way bloggers and other thoughtful people can help:
I have opened forums at
www.DisasterReliefIdeas.org for the discussion of ideas to aid disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I am not soliciting donations, only ideas. Experts in aspects of disaster relief (housing, healthcare, rebuilding, etc.) are also able to rate these ideas, giving us a means of identifying the most promising ones, which will be shared with disaster relief professionals and persons in authority. Please help our society by contributing your ideas, especially if you are unable to contribute financially to relief efforts.

Opportunity, of a sort
I believe that you'll be able to get a very good deal on a used SUV over the next few months.
It reminds me of one springtime a few years ago. The winter had been terrible (1999?), and everyone ran out and bought 4-wheel drive vehicles. The car lots were full of used sports cars, and the dealers couldn't even give 'em away.
