Maybe Someone Sells "Hypocritical Asshole" Offsets?

According to this editorial, the supposedly "green" Prius is an environmental nightmare, especially when compared to the Hummer.

Thanks to the Jawas for the pointer.

2 Seems like most every feel-good idea comes with its own special sack o' consequences, many -- if not all -- unintended.

3 I actually went to read and compare some of the vehicles mentioned in the article. I'm not all hip on being "green" but I do plan on making a choice with my next car, in part, based upon lowering my contributions to the quarterly record profits (not merely revenues) of the oil companies.

I don't think I'd call 8mpg spitting distance between the Prius and the Aveo (although the 8pmg difference is well offset by the Aveo being much cheaper to purchase). You also, typically, get higher quality and durability from a Toyota than a Chevy, so unless these cars break the typical mold cast by their manufacturers, you get what you pay for. As a side note for people who shoot for the "buy American" angle, better check where your parts and labor are coming from before you choose a Ford(Mexico) over a Honda(US) (for example). Results vary of course, but if you really go look you may find a surprise or 2.

I guess, according to the article that it's okay if I buy a Prius as long as I don't drive it around feeling like I'm doing a good thing for the environment, particularly the area in Canada that produces nickel for the batteries. And honestly, it's fine with me if the Canadians want to ruin some of their land to save me gas money.

I'm not saying I'm out to buy a Prius, but when I AM ready for my next car, this article by Chris Demorro will not affect my choice at all.
